TORONTO – Emulating the Italian Salon, the Espresso Manifesto Salone di Cultura series is a bold initiative created by musician/producer and artistic director Daniela Nardi, to raise the profile of contemporary Italian-Canadian culture. Presented in association with Villa Charities and its Youth Committee this year for the first time, the Salone di Cultura is held annually to celebrate Italian Heritage Month. The event will be held at 7:00pm in the historic Columbus Centre, 901 Lawrence Ave. West in Toronto.

The Espresso Manifesto Series has become a popular annual celebration all things Italian-Canadian, especially for those interested in experiencing the diversity of Canada and the vibrant cultural fabric of Toronto.

The Salone brings together performers, artists, and guests to explore and experience contemporary expressions of art, music and food in the Italian-Canadian community. The event will open with a classic Italian aperitivo exploring the regions of Italy, prepared by the Centre’s Boccaccio Ristorante. There will be an exciting selection of Italian food and wines served, to complement the activities. The evening will be highlighted by a musical performance by Daniela Nardi’s Espresso Manifesto and world-renowned Italian clarinetist Gabriele Mirabassi. Opening the set will be Domenico Capilongo reading from his book of jazz-inspired poetry Hold the Note. In the gallery space, the Salone will showcase the works of Italian-Canadian visual artist Sara Angelucci.

The theme for this year's Salone is "Memory and Vision" and calls upon the Columbus Centre's preparations for an exciting renewal program beginning Spring 2017, in order to make way for its own contemporary vision and a new multi-functional facility. This event will be the first celebration of the Columbus Centre's history, influence, and importance in the Italian-Canadian community. As we make our way towards the 150th anniversary of Canada, a country which the Italian community has certainly left its mark on, the evening will honour their great achievements and turn our sights and imaginations toward the possibilities of the future.

At the previous five editions of the Salone, audiences were treated to the cuisine of Pugliese chef Massimo Bruno, and to hearing presentations by extraordinary speakers, including; author Antonio Nicaso who discussed social issues; and Professor Edi Giunta of New Jersey University, who launched her anthology entitled Embroidered Stories. Musical performances have been headlined by Daniela Nardi’s Espresso Manifesto with special guest musicians from Italy such as Peppe Volatrelli, Fabrizio Bosso and Gabriele Mirabassi. Readings from poets such as Valentino Assenza, Gianna Patriarca, and Domenico Capilongo have helped to enhance the experience, and the works of photographer Rino Noto and sculptor Julie Campagna have been part of the art exhibited.

An award-winning singer/songwriter/pianist and Founder/Artistic Director of Espresso Manifesto’s Salone di Cultura, Daniela Nardi has been making her mark as an innovative and leading cultural entrepreneur. Panorama Italia has dubbed her “A successful icon for the new generation of Italian-Canadians.” The Salone di Cultura series showcases contemporary Italian-Canadian artists, creators and thinkers. It nurtures the cultural exchange between Italy and the extremely large and distinctive Italian community in the Toronto diaspora.

As a musician, Nardi’s discography demonstrates her artistic versatility and curiosity. CANTO (2015), recorded in Naples and Toronto, is a lush and intoxicating collection of timeless songs by great Italian songwriters. The Journal de Montréal pronounced it “Luminous… Everything that is beautiful”.

Nardi’s The Songs of Paolo Conte (2012), pays homage to the legendary Italian singer/songwriter. It topped charts in Canada and the U.S. JazzTimes and JazzWeekly raved. CBC called it “sensual, very suave… very beautiful… magnificent.” It won her Toronto Independent Music Awards nominations for Best World Artist in 2014 and 2015. The Rose Tattoo (2008) led to a Canadian Smooth Jazz Award for Female Vocalist of the Year, and the Readers Pick for Best Female Vocalist in the prestigious Now Magazine’s Best of Toronto Awards. One True Thing (2005), with words, music and piano by Nardi herself, earned her a Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards nomination for Best Group.

Daniela’s roster boasts notable concert performances: Toronto’s Koerner Hall, Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Hall, Jakarta’s Jazz Goes to Campus, New York’s Drom, and two nights at the Montreal Jazz Festival.

Along with her artistic pursuits, Nardi sits on the Villa Charities and Columbus Centre boards. She is on the advisory board for the Prism Music Video Prize and calls Toronto home with her musician/composer husband Ron Davis.

Daniela Nardi and Espresso Manifesto gratefully acknowledge the generous support of the sponsors which include: Villa Charities, Cundari Advertising, the Italian Cultural Institute, Rufino Coffee, and Boccaccio Ristorante.
